Intestinal worms can be very irritating especially in children. They are parasites that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract. They not just affect the person, but also the fauna of the gastrointestinal tract. They are primarily found in intestine.

They gain an entry into the body via contaminated water or food. They can also enter the body by transmitting agents e.g. mosquitoes and sexual contact. Poor hygiene, weak immunity, and eating uncooked meat are also some of the causes.

There are various kinds of worm that live in the gut, but the most harmful worms are pinworms, roundworms, tapeworm and whipworm.


The symptoms vary according to the kind of worm that is present inside the body. The common symptoms of intestinal worms include:

  • Stomach pain
  • Feeling hungry constantly
  • Gas
  • Bad breath
  • Restless sleep
  • Anemia
  • Weight loss
  • Weakness
  • Itching around rectum
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Fever
  • Nutritional disorders
  • Pain in legs

There are certain home remedies that help in easy eradication of these worms. They are:

1. Pumpkin Seeds

One of the most commonly used remedies for intestinal worms in pumpkin seeds. These seeds contain cucurbitacin which possesses anti- parasitic properties. This compound can paralyze the worms. This makes it difficult for the worms to stay attached to the walls of the intestine and so they get out of the body.

To follow this remedy, take 2 tablespoon of peeled and crushed seeds. Add them to 3 cups of boiling water. Let it steep for about half an hour. Let it cool and then consume this water.

Fasting a day prior to using the remedy and taking the juice of dry boiled prunes is recommended.

Alternatively, you can roast pumpkin seeds and mix a tablespoon of them to a tablespoon of honey and take it every morning on an empty stomach for about one week.

2. Pineapple

The tropical fruit is not just tasty, but also helps in deworming. It helps in improving digestion and is great for constipation. It is loaded with bromelain, a digestive enzyme that breaks protein and fight worms.

Taking fresh pineapple juice every morning on an empty stomach is the best way to deal with worms.

3. Garlic

Garlic is an amazing remedy for worms and helps in management of any kind of worm. Garlic contains sulphur- containing amino acids that help in fighting the worms.

Take three cloves of raw garlic and take it on empty stomach regularly for a week to combat the worms.

You can take two garlic pods and crush them. Boil them in one and a half cup of milk. Drink it on an empty stomach. Follow the remedy for a week.

4. Lotus Stem

Taking lotus stem also helps in getting rid of worms. It contains fibres, potassium, vitamin C, thiamine, vitamin B6, riboflavin, copper, manganese and copper.

Take two tablespoon juice of fresh lotus root. Add honey and have it on an empty stomach every morning.

5. Indian Lilac

Also identified as neem, it is a very effective remedy for deworming.

Fry a one tablespoon of the dry neem flowers in a teaspoon of ghee. Eat it with boiled rice 2 times a day for 4 days.

Do not use the remedy if you are pregnant or breastfeed a baby.
